Sterling's Biography

Current Legislative duties:

Minister Fisheries and Aquaculture, Environment, MLA Shelburne

About Sterling:

Before being elected as MLA for Shelburne in the 2006 Nova Scotia general election, Sterling Belliveau was a self-employed fisherman who served for three terms as a councilor for the Municipality of Barrington including two terms as Warden.
Over the years Sterling has served on various boards and committees related to the fishing industry as well as serving with community groups, such as the volunteer ambulance service in his home community of Woods Harbour.
Sterling understands the desperate need for a rural strategy in Shelburne County that includes:
• Addressing health care issues such as shortage of doctors and long wait periods.
• Dealing with transportation issues like the fact that Highway 103 still needs to be finished and the need to develop a better paving and road maintenance program for rural communities
• Removing the HST on the essentials of life, like home heating costs
• Providing a capital gains tax break and improved loan access for fishermen
• Ensuring long term health care access needs in western Shelburne County are met with the current expansion Bay Side Home.
Sterling is married to Luella Jean (Cameron). They have two adult children and one grandchild.
